The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that no amount of alcohol is safe, stressing that alcohol damages the heart, brain, and liver, and is officially classed as a Group 1 carcinogen the same category as tobacco.
Experts warn that even light or moderate drinking raises the risk of cancer, heart disease, liver damage, and depression. Research links alcohol to at least seven forms of cancer.
Professor Debbie Shaw cross, a liver specialist at King’s College Hospital, London, explained:
“In the first few weeks there will be improvements in sleep quality, concentration, hydration and digestion. In the long term, blood pressure will drop and stress on the liver will reduce.”
Doctors note that health improvements begin from day one of cutting down or quitting alcohol.
⚠️ Health Impact of Alcohol
Brain: Shrinks brain tissue, dulls memory, worsens mood.
Heart: Raises blood pressure, increases clot and stroke risk.
Liver: Causes fatty deposits, cirrhosis, and cancer.
Mental Health: Disrupts dopamine and serotonin, leading to depression.
💡 Benefits of Quitting
Days: Better sleep, digestion, and energy.
Weeks: Lower blood pressure, clearer focus.
Months: Rebalanced brain chemistry, improved mood.
Years: Reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, and liver failure.
📊 Key Numbers
14 units weekly = six pints of beer or 10 small glasses of wine.
One drink weekly = 3% higher cancer risk.
Daily small glass of wine = 15% higher breast cancer risk.
Two bottles of wine weekly = 27% higher breast cancer risk.
The WHO concluded:
👉 Every drink adds risk but every alcohol-free day starts recovery.
