The Lagos State Government has screened 1,000 police officers under the Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative, a medical outreach programme aimed at improving the health and welfare of officers serving in the state.
The exercise, which commenced on Friday at the Police Headquarters in Ikeja, provided beneficiaries with free eye screening, prescription lenses, and general health checks. The initiative is fully funded by the State Government as part of the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu to strengthen institutions responsible for safeguarding lives and property.
Speaking after the outreach, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Hassan Adekoya, said the extension of the programme to police officers followed a request by the Nigeria Police Force leadership, in recognition of the critical role officers play in maintaining law and order across Lagos.
Adekoya explained that the Police Care Initiative builds on the success of the recently launched Drivers’ Care Programme, which began at Lillypond Terminal, Apapa, and moved through Eleko Junction and Obalende before concluding its first phase at Iyana-Iba Park. The drivers’ programme targets 10,000 professional drivers statewide, offering free eye screening and glasses, drug testing and sensitisation, as well as complimentary cards from the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute.
He added that extending the initiative to police officers underscores the State Government’s appreciation of security personnel and the importance of keeping them medically fit to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen the state’s security architecture.
With the successful completion of the 1,000-officer target, the Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustained, welfare-focused interventions that directly support public servants.
